Why Choose Portugal? “It’s a no brainer!”

Nov 15, 2021 | Choosing a destination for relocation, be it for retirement, investment, or a lifestyle change and, irrespective of the pandemic, the Algarve remains a prime choice as verified by many surveys. It is widely recognised, throughout the world, that Portugal handled the advent of Covid-19 with skill and good judgement.

At the outset, the Portuguese nation followed government instruction to isolate and to adhere to social distancing and this has paid dividends in their recovery programme. With caution still uppermost in everyone’s minds, the benefits are now being reaped as shops, restaurants and bars have reopened their doors. The ‘new’ normal seems to be working very well.

Brexit, coupled with the repercussions of Covid-19 have not dampened the appetite for many to seek a home in Portugal as was feared at the outset. To the contrary, demand continues to be evident as enquiries to real estate agencies continue to gather impetus. The Algarve, in the south, benefits from the second highest GDP in Portugal and the second highest property values per square metre after Lisbon and is proving to be the choice for investors.

Clients internationally have recognised the benefits of living or investing in Portugal and their eagerness to profit from these advantages continue to grow.

How many countries can boast such a temperate climate, a low cost of living, tax incentives, a laid-back pace of life, an indigenous nation with the warmest of welcomes, bounteous gastronomy from the sea and land, ease of international access via roads and airports, and above all, an enviable reputation related to the pandemic and a national security that has protected against terrorist attacks?

Buyers from the United Kingdom have had to overcome some legislation changes after Brexit affecting length of stay (if not a Portuguese resident) but this seems not to have been a great deterrent as the benefits of life in Portugal outweigh the obstacles.

The Portuguese government have created incentives enough through schemes such as the D7 visa and Non-Habitual Residency programs (see the Fiscal page) to make other options attractive.

I spoke with some British clients recently and asked them why they chose to move with their family to Portugal.

The response was immediate – “It was a no-brainer. Lockdown concentrated our minds, and we were fortunate enough to be able to make the move. Great schools for the kids, financial incentives, safety, lifestyle, clean air, climate …..”.

So many people are making the same comparisons.

Don’t leave it too late to find your place is Portugal’s bounteous land.
